Physics in Advent invites the world to discover the gift of science
“PiA – Physics in Advent” is a special kind of Advent calendar: hidden behind every door lies a science adventure. Everyone who registers is sent a video clip each day – from 1 to 24 December – with an intriguing experiment that can be carried out using ordinary household materials. Participants recreate the experiments and use them to solve a clue. The next day, they receive a clip explaining the solution and one point if they answered correctly. At Christmas, all participants receive their individual certificate and, with a bit of luck, maybe even a prize too!
“PiA – Physics in Advent” is designed with children and teenagers in mind but everyone who is curious or young-at-heart will want to have a go. Every year parents, teachers and many other grown-ups join the competition. Prizes such as iPods, books, a flight in a glider or a trip to Dallas for NBA basketball games will be raffled and awarded to the top participants. The project is organised by the University of Göttingen together with many national and international physics societies and STEM initiatives.
“PiA – Physics in Advent aims to inspire people to have a go and provides them with fun and learning all wrapped up together in a physics experiment!” says Professor Arnulf Quadt from Göttingen University’s Faculty of Physics, who designed and manages the project. The Advent calendar is offered free of charge and the video clips are in English and German. In addition, the lists of household materials and subtitles for the clips are also in French, Italian, Lithuanian, Polish, Portuguese, Slovenian and Ukrainian.
