The Faculty of Forest Sciences and Forest Ecology offers an up-to-date and varied course of study that illuminates forests with their properties and their importance for biodiversity and climate protection, but also explicitly deals with the possibilities of human use, thereby addressing economic questions as well as social ones, and the dimension of forests and its use. The course also provides knowledge about the properties and possible uses of wood and wood products. Our faculty maintains numerous cooperations with other universities, research institutions and interdisciplinary centers all over the world and is active in many interdisciplinary research associations.
Latest news Since 2024, we have been able to offer a new edition of the ERASMUS Mundus Double Degree Master's programme ‘Sustainable Forest and Nature Management’ (SUFONAMA). After a first year at our partner university in Copenhagen, prospective students can complete their studies after the second year in Göttingen. The application period for citizens from EU/EEA-countries as well as Switzerland runs until 1 March 2026. The Faculty of Forest Sciences and Forest Ecology in Göttingen, one of the leading institutions for forest sciences in Europe, invites excellent early career researchers in the field of forest sciences to prepare and conduct their next research project at the University of Göttingen. The Forst-Talent Fellowships are funded by the Eva Mayr-Stihl Foundation. Application deadline 11.01.2026
News from the faculty Sexual violence is a social problem that also exists at the University. To address and prevent this, the University of Göttingen has developed an online tool to raise awareness of sexual violence. The tool focuses on videos and questions that show scenes from everyday university life and are designed to encourage reflection. How do we manage resilient forest ecosystems? In this series, we will explore the multifaceted approaches in forest science and management that experts use all over the globe to adapt to climate change and land use shifts. Along the way, we’ll hear from experts about their latest research and personal career paths. This is a chance not only to broaden your understanding, but also to get inspired as you carve your own path in forest science and related disciplines. Our confidante, Katrin Meyer, would like to introduce herself to you. She will be happy to serve as your first point of contact for problems or conflicts of any kind, offering advice and, if necessary, referring you to the responsible offices and committees, such as the ombuds office.
Press releases Water and nitrogen are vital for trees. However, climate change is altering the availability of water and thus the uptake of nutrients dissolved in it – especially from the upper soil layers, which dry out quickly. How do trees access water and nitrogen from deeper soil layers under these conditions? Researchers at the University of Göttingen have tracked for the first time how mature trees absorb both substances and transport them from the roots to the treetops. Professor Dennis Baldocchi from the University of California in Berkeley has been awarded a Gauss Professorship by the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities. Over the next two months, he will be conducting research at the Faculty of Forest Sciences and Forest Ecology at the University of Göttingen, where he will be working with Professor Alexander Knohl and his team in the Bioclimatology Group. Here you can find more press releases about the faculty and an archive.
