Mission Statement for Teaching and Learning

As a research-intensive, internationally renowned university, the University of Göttingen is guided by the ideals and educational philosophy of the Enlightenment. The Faculty of Business and Economics brings this university mission statement to life in teaching and learning by consistently aligning its research and teaching with the core principle of Responsible Innovation. By this we mean enlightened, responsible innovation by individuals or organisations. To prepare our students as effectively as possible to engage in the process of Responsible Innovation, our teaching is based on the following cornerstones:

Research Focus

Our teaching is consistently based on the excellent academic research carried out within our faculty, and we are increasingly involving students - from undergraduates right through to PhD candidates - actively in research. Through a curriculum that is both research- and performance-oriented, students are prepared for the process of lifelong learning as well as for careers in academia and professional practice.

Sustainability

Our teaching is guided by the fundamental belief that our society must be directed towards sustainable development. Accordingly, we incorporate economic, environmental and social content into our courses, thereby supporting students in their development into responsible and critically thinking individuals.

Digitisation

We take digitalisation into account in three areas: course content, teaching methods and the organisation of teaching. As such, digitalisation is a key component of our teaching, as it presents significant challenges for our economy. Furthermore, we use digitalisation to develop new teaching and learning methods, such as digital learning platforms, and to improve and streamline the organisation of our courses.

Internationalisation

Our degree programmes have an international focus and offer our students a wide range of courses and study opportunities taught in English. Thanks to our numerous partner universities, our students can spend exchange semesters all over the world. Foreign language courses and specialised modules designed to develop intercultural skills prepare students for life in an international environment.

Commitment to Diversity

An open and respectful outlook on life is essential in modern, diverse societies. We therefore support students in developing open-minded attitudes and ways of thinking. We view different perspectives as enriching elements. Through specific teaching and support services, we take account of the diversity of our student body.

Cooperation & Communication

Our teaching is characterised by a collaborative and communicative approach between lecturers and students. This involves treating one another with respect, mutual commitment, constructive feedback and identifying opportunities for improvement. We support students in achieving their learning objectives through teaching designed to motivate them.

Service Orientation

Our students benefit from a comprehensive and dedicated advisory service provided by our Service Centre. The staff are expert points of contact for all questions and concerns students may have regarding their studies. In addition, the members of the student council make an important contribution to supporting teaching at the Faculty through a wide range of activities, as well as advisory and information services.

The proximity of the Faculty of Business and Economics to other faculties on campus, as well as the close cooperation between the University and other academic organisations in the university town of Göttingen, fosters a unique ‘Göttingen Spirit’, which makes studying at the Faculty of Business and Economics a special and formative experience for our students.
