The responsibilities of a research project you are involved in are time-consuming, your work in the laboratory demands your full attention, or preparing your teaching, a lecture, or an upcoming conference seems more urgent than writing. Then the Writing Retreat is for you!

Dr. Andrea Adams is a historian, writing trainer, and coach who has been supporting doctoral candidates and postdoctoral researchers in the areas of academic writing and career orientation for over 15 years. Across her workshops, retreats, and coaching activities, she combines a strong practical orientation with ample opportunities for participants to reflect on their own skills while expanding their methodological expertise and knowledge. In addition to her freelance work, she is involved in coordinating qualification programs for doctoral and postdoctoral researchers. Currently she leads a program for female doctoral researchers at the Center for Junior Scholars at TU Berlin.

Education and training (selected):
PhD in Modern History; Systemic coaching training in “results-oriented coaching” according to S. Greif, ABF e.V.; certificate program in career counseling, ZEWK TU Berlin; training as a writing coach: certificate program Research – Writing – Teaching, Writing Lab at Bielefeld University.
This Writing Retreat offers five days of continuous, focused, and undisturbed work on your writing projects. The inspiring experience of writing in a community, combined with facilitation by an experienced academic writing coach, creates a supportive foundation for a creative and productive working atmosphere. You may work on any type of writing task related to your dissertation project, such as drafting an article, preparing a talk, or revising a specific chapter of your text. Interdisciplinary writing tandems support you in setting daily writing goals together and reflecting on your progress.

In addition, you will have the opportunity to take part in short workshops on writing strategies and overcoming challenges in the writing process as well as individual writing coaching sessions, where you can discuss specific questions in a face-to-face setting and address any challenges you are currently encountering in your writing process.

In addition to the exclusive, focused writing time, the retreat includes the following offers:

Individual coaching sessions (voluntary)
During the writing times, all interested participants can receive 50 minutes of individual writing coaching in a separate room. If necessary, shorter follow-up coaching sessions are available in addition.

Mini workshops (mandatory part of schedule)
Various short workshops at the start of each day invite participants to reflect on and further develop their writing skills.

    • Getting to know each other, logistics and structure of the writing week
    • Input: How to plan writing goals and your writing time
    • Set your goals for the week
    • Setting up and check-in with Peer Writing Pairs
  • Getting into the writing flow
  • From Procrastination to Focus
  • Constructive feedback
  • Writing groups


      • Closing
      The writing retreat will end with a closing workshop on Friday. You will not be left home alone with your writing projects. Instead, you will reflect on goals achieved, next steps and a plan how to continue writing efficiently. In addition to that, you will get the chance to form writing groups to continue writing together if you like.


Credits: 3 Credits
Requirements:

  • Participants are supposed to attend alls days of the Writing Retreat.
  • Please think of what writing project you want to work on in advance.



Registration:
Please, register online via the registration form for GGG courses. In the registration form, under course-specific information, please indicate what stage of your doctoral studies you are at and how you intend to integrate the Writing Retreat (a whole week away from your regular commitments, such as teaching) into your daily routine! If you require childcare or assistance in order to participate, please let us know when you register. We will work with you to find flexible solutions that meet your needs.

Please also note our regulations on bindingness: e.g. four weeks before a course starts, all course registrations are regarded as binding.
