System Accreditation at the University of Göttingen

Subject of Accreditation

The subject of system accreditation is the internal quality management system of a higher education institution in Teaching and Learning. System accreditation gives a higher education institution the right, with the involvement of external expertise, to assess the quality and accreditability of its study programmes itself and to award the seal of the German Accreditation Council for the study programmes it has assessed.

In the course of system accreditation, a higher education institution must prove that it systematically implements the formal and subject-related criteria laid down in the State Treaty on the Accreditation of Study Programmes and the Lower Saxony Study Accreditation Ordinance. To this end, the quality management system must provide for regular evaluations of the degree programmes and the performance areas relevant to teaching and learning, in which internal and external students and teaching staff, external academic experts, representatives of professional practice and graduates are involved. If the assessments reveal a need for action, the necessary measures are taken and implemented. The data required to implement the concept of the quality management system is collected regularly throughout the university.

A positive system accreditation certifies that the university's quality management system in Teaching and Learning is suitable for ensuring that the qualification objectives and quality standards of its degree programmes are achieved. The university bears the "System accredited" quality seal of the German Accreditation Council.

On November 4th 2025, the ZEvA Commission decided to award system accreditation to the University of Göttingen for a period of six years. It is now authorised to award the seal of the Accreditation Council for the accreditation of its study programmes.
