Support for women* on the path to habilitation at the Faculty of Humanities

Funding on the path to habilitation / completion of the "second book" for women* at the Faculty of Humanities

1. Goal

The Faculty of Humanities is one of those institutions at the university where the percentage of women* graduates is pleasingly high at 70.7%. At the same time, however, the phenomenon of the leaky pipeline – i.e., women* dropping out at a certain point in their scientific career paths – is particularly prominent at the point of habilitations.

In order to counteract this trend and to minimize the obstacles to a successful habilitation degree for women*, the Faculty of Humanities provides demand responsive and flexible support with financial resources for scholars on their way to a professorship or habilitation. The funding is to be understood as a contribution to counteract the socially and culturally determined gender imbalance in the highest professional lifetime positions – professorships.

2. Funding

The funding can be used for, e.g.:

  • the hiring of student or research assistants,
  • travel expenses (e.g. field research, archival work, conferences) for business trips,
  • consumables,
  • career support measures: trainings, coachings.

For other financial needs, please contact the Equal Opportunities Office of the Faculty of Humanities. Please note that some measures, such as business trips or participation in trainings/coachings, as well as hiring of auxiliary staff, require prior coordination with the supervisor.

3. Eligible applicants

Funding is provided for habilitation candidates/ post-doctoral researchers in the disciplines represented at the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Göttingen. Applicants must have been in the postdoc phase for at least two years.
Explicitly encouraged to apply for funding are women* with a history of migration or flight, a non-academic family history, and unconventional biographies.

4. Application documents to be submitted

  • application that emphasizes the need for funding (possibly with a note of special personal or family circumstances)
  • academic CV
  • brief description of the work, max. 1-2 pages (font size 12, line spacing: 1.5)
  • a precise timetable for the completion of the entire writing (it must be evident from the submitted documents that the work can be completed in six months)

Applications should be addressed to the Equal Opportunities Officer of the Faculty of Humanities: gleichstellung@phil.uni-goettingen.de. The members of the Equal Opportunities Commission review and evaluate the applications. Funding is available as long as funds are available.

Overall, the focus of the evaluation of the previous scientific career is not on the age of the applicant, but the ratio of the individual duration of the scientific career and the scientific achievements to date. It is also to be asked whether possible delays or hardships in the scientific career are due to individual life circumstances (e.g. birth/care of children, disability/illness, caring for relatives), but also biographical reasons (history of migration or flight, educational advancement, non-academic background).
